Karakalpakstan

Karakalpakstan covers a large part of western Uzbekistan, so distances shape every itinerary. Nukus is the usual starting point, while Muynak and the former Aral Sea shoreline introduce one of Central Asia's most consequential environmental stories.

Nukus and Muynak

Nukus is known for the Savitsky Museum and is the practical hub for arranging onward travel. Muynak's ship cemetery and local museum document the town's former relationship with the Aral Sea. Visit with historical context and sensitivity: the landscape represents lived environmental and economic loss, not simply a dramatic photo stop.

Beyond the main road

Longer trips may include desert fortresses, the Ustyurt Plateau or lakes and wetlands, usually with an experienced local driver. Road conditions, weather and mobile coverage vary. Carry water, confirm fuel and permits where relevant, and avoid independent off-road travel without local knowledge.
