Bahauddin Naqshband: Bukhara's Great Saint

January 20, 2026

The life, teachings and shrine of the founder of the Naqshbandi Sufi order.

Khwaja Muhammad Bahauddin Naqshband (1318–1389) was born in the village of Qasr-i Hinduvan near Bukhara, later renamed Qasr-i Arifon in his honour. He gave his name to the Naqshbandi order, one of the most widespread Sufi paths in the world, followed from Central Asia to South Asia, Turkey and beyond.

"Dast ba kar, dil ba yar"

The order is known for the principle "the hand at work, the heart with the Beloved" — spiritual devotion pursued within everyday life rather than withdrawal from it, and for silent dhikr (remembrance of God).

The shrine (ziarat)

His memorial complex just outside Bukhara is among the most visited pilgrimage sites in Central Asia, drawing devotees for prayer and reflection throughout the year.
